9 Makeup Brands with Plastic-Free Packaging for a Guilt-Free Face

For those of us who love makeup but feel guilt about all the little plastic containers we've tossed in the trash over the course of our lives since curbside recycling is almost never an option for them, there are some great brands offering guilt-free alternatives.
Here are some of our favorite makeup brands with plastic-free packaging:

1. Elate

  • Come for the Packaging: All compacts, tools, and palettes made from bamboo, which is a self-regenerating natural resource. You can also purchase refills when you run out that will come in seed paper that you can plant!

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: Ever heard of a capsule beauty collection?? Doesn't that actually make a lot of sense? Thanks to Elate, it's totally a thing now.

  • Wear It with Pride: Vegan, cruelty-free, and gluten-free.

2. Kjaer Weis

  • Come for the Packaging: Oh, what was that? You said REFILLABLE, Kjaer Weis?? Done. This packaging is not only refillable, it is so luxe and beautiful, you'll probably want to pass it down as a family heirloom.

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: We are fans of their lip liner, and we've heard amazing things about their mascara and cream blushes, and pretty much everything they carry has won an award.

  • Wear It with Pride: All ingredients Certified Natural or Certified Organic by the Controllo e Certificazione Prodotti Biologici in Italy

3. Aether

  • Come for the Packaging: 100% post-consumer, recyclable paper eye shadow palettes! No eyeshadow pans or elastic.

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: Their Gemstone eye shadow palettes are the dreamiest you've ever seen.

  • Wear It with Pride: Based in San Francisco, CA, all Aether products are vegan and a portion of each product's sales goes to a different non-profit, like The Rainforest Foundation and The Water Project.

4. Antonym

  • Come for the Packaging: Bamboo compacts and FSC certified paper boxes.

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: Solid bronzers, blushes, and eye shadow palettes that compete with your conventional faves.

  • Wear It with Pride: Vegan, Leaping Bunny, and Ecocert certified natural and organic ingredients.

5. Vapour

  • Come for the Packaging: "We package solid products in aluminum and our liquid products in glass, both widely recyclable. We choose product boxes made from managed forest paper stock, and printed with soy ink in a wind-powered facility."

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: We're not even that into lip gloss, but we love their Elixir Lip Gloss, and honestly, just the fact that most of their products come in easy-to-swipe (and toss in your purse) sticks has us sold.

  • Wear It with Pride: Certifications include Leaping Bunny, Certified Vegetarian by the American Vegetarian Association, member of the Organic Trade Association as well as The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, and they are 100% Made in New Mexico, USA!

6. Ilia

  • Come for the Packaging: "recycled aluminum, newly introduced glass components, and post-consumer recycled paper printed with vegetable-based dyes."

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: Their Limitless Lash Mascara is hands down our favorite mascara ever, and they have a range of amazing lip products that are so good, you'll never go back to conventional brands.

  • Wear It with Pride: Leaping Bunny certified, and all products include natural and organic ingredients formulated without Parabens, Phthalates, Sulfates, GMO, Synthetic Fragrances, gluten, and talc.

7. RMS

  • Come for the Packaging: Most of their products come in recyclable glass or aluminum.

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: Their most famous product is "Un" Cover-Up, which can be used as either a buildable foundation or concealer that blends in perfectly to the skin. They also have some killer highlighters and high intensity lipsticks

  • Wear It with Pride: Almost all ingredients are Certified Organic by the USDA.

8. Fat and the Moon

  • Come for the Packaging: Many of their products come in recyclable aluminum containers that are easy to reuse for your next DIY creation!

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: We are very into their highlighter right now, but are also very intrigued by all of their cheeky healing powders and balms like Kooch Quench, Rhoid Relief, Pimple Mud, and Cold Sore Killa. They even have a great line for Mama & Babe. Something for everyone!

  • Wear It with Pride: Handmade my legit herbalists, these witchy potions and brews are made "plants that are abundant, ethically harvested and organically cultivated and combine them in formulations that are radically non-toxic. "

9. Kosas

  • Come for the Packaging: Their signature lip colors come in aluminum tubes with a magnetic cap to keep that sucker shut tight!

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: We're dying to try their Tinted Face Oil and swoon over the creamy lip colors.

  • Wear It with Pride: Made in California, all of these gorgeous minimalist products are made without Parabens, Pthalates, BHA/BHT, Mineral Oil, Propylene Glycol, Polyethylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, “Fragrance," Petrolatum, Vitamin A, retinoids, or retinoid derivatives. Also vegan, gluten-free, and Leaping Bunny certified.

Honorable Mention: Alima Pure

  • Come for the Packaging: While this Portland-based makeup brand does use plastic packaging, all of their foundations, concealers, and eye shadows come in REFILLABLE compacts!

  • Stay for the Clean Beauty: Loving their bronzer and powder blush right now!

  • Wear It with Pride: Certified B Corp, 100% carbon neutral, and member of 1% for the planet.
